Kass – the Valley of Flowers, it’s a very common name in Maharashtra. It’s a must see place if you are in Maharashtra in the Monsoon particularly during September/ October.
Well the plateau gained popularity outside Maharashtra when UNESCO declared it a bio-diversity site in 2012. With increased influx of tourist the plateau has also gone some changes; or rather the authorities have taken some steps to safeguard the bio-diversity site. Now visitors have to pay entry fees and a separate fees has to be paid for Cameras. Now you have restaurants in near vicinity of Kaas Plateau, much more than what was there some years back. Last but not the least now the entire plateau is barricaded and visitors are allowed to go around only a portion of the plateau.
Kaas is easily accessible from Pune and Satara. It’s around 130 kms from Pune and around 25 kms from Satara city. The road till Satara from Pune is smooth 4-lane highway and the road from Satara to Kaas is a single lane road in good condition.
I visited Kaas this year on September 14 and was lucky to witness a good bloom.
